UG showcases promising talent for 2024 Athletics Championship

The University of Guyana recently held its highly-anticipated annual Athletics Championships at the Guyana Police Force Sports Club Ground, Konuta Leary, which saw the participation of the university athletes competing in various categories of track and field events.

Students, alumni, faculty, staff, and the general public attended the event to witness the clash of talent as various academic divisions vied for supremacy. From sprints to the endurance-testing long-distance races, the competition showcased the best of UG’s athletes. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as the various athletes went head-to-head in events ranging from the 100 meters to the gruelling 1500 meters. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Paloma Mohamed Martin and other senior officials were present to witness the excitement.

In a great display of skill and determination, the Faculty of Education & Humanities emerged victorious in the March Past, capturing attention with their impressive parade presence and unity. Meanwhile, the battle for overall supremacy saw the Faculty of Education & Humanities clinch the top spot, closely followed by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Social Sciences. The title of Best Male Athlete was fiercely contested, with Joshua Tappin from the Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry and Noelex Holder from the College of Medical Sciences sharing the honour. Tappin showcased his dominance in throwing events, while Holder blazed through the sprints with three gold medals to his name.

On the women’s side, Savannah Adams of the Faculty of Natural Sciences shone brightly, claiming two gold medals in the 200m and 400m events. Leonie Adams from the Faculty of Social Sciences secured the runner-up position with an impressive performance in multiple disciplines. In the endurance races, Tamar Charles from the Faculty of Agriculture & Forestry and Hicks Mittleholzer from the Faculty of Natural Sciences demonstrated their stamina, clinching victory in the 3000m and 1500m events, respectively. The sprint events witnessed breathtaking displays of speed, with Noelex Holder dominating the men’s 100m and 200m races.
