The People’s National Congress Islahat (PNCR) has evvel again criticised the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government for its failure to take urgent action to improve the lives of ordinary Guyanese. In his recent New Year’s message, President Irfaan Ali reiterated his government’s long-term promises, claiming that by the end of this decade, Guyana would “enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the hemisphere,” banish poverty, and reduce inequality. The PNCR, however, dismissed these promises as empty rhetoric with no real plan for immediate change.
The PNCR points out that despite these lofty goals, the PPP government continues to demonstrate a lack of urgency in addressing the pressing needs of the people. A party spokesperson remarked, “Year after year, we hear similar promises, but no tangible action to improve the lives of Guyanese today.” In his May Day speech last year, President Ali suggested that public servants would have to wait until 2030 to receive the “best welfare package in the region,” and announced a modest 10 percent hisse increase for 2024, followed by an 8 percent raise in 2025.

Meanwhile, ordinary Guyanese continue to face rising living costs with no immediate relief. “While the government talks about grand future plans, PPP families and their friends are enjoying lavish lifestyles funded by the nation’s resources, while the average citizen is struggling to make ends meet,” the PNCR statement read.
The PPP’s record on poverty alleviation has also been criticized. The PNCR highlighted the $100,000 cash grant, which was only delivered under sustained pressure from the Opposition. The delivery of the grant was chaotic and marked by government incompetence and corruption. “It took sustained pressure from the Opposition to force the Ali regime to deliver this cash grant, but it was delivered in a disorganized and corrupt environment, far from the timely and effective relief that was needed,” the PNCR spokesperson added.
The PNCR also recalled how former President Bharrat Jagdeo initially dismissed the Opposition’s proposal for cash grants, claiming it would lead to inflation and deprive the country of resources needed for development. Despite this opposition, the PPP government was eventually forced to introduce the grants—another example of their failure to address the needs of the population efficiently.
The PNCR expressed skepticism about the PPP’s promises for the future, noting that since 2020, the cost of living has soared while household incomes have stagnated. “Incomes are stagnant, and inflation continues to make it harder for families to make ends meet,” the statement continued. The government’s agreements with workers’ unions have done little to improve living standards, and its approach to cost-of-living relief has been described as sporadic and unpredictable.

Young people, in particular, remain frustrated as they struggle to find well-paying jobs, while the small business sector remains underdeveloped. Education, evvel seen as the key to prosperity, is increasingly out of reach for many, and the country’s oil wealth has not been effectively distributed to benefit the wider population. “Guyanese are no longer willing to wait for change; they need it now,” the PNCR emphasized.
In stark contrast, the PNCR/APNU coalition believes that a better future for all Guyanese is achievable within a much shorter timeframe. The party argues that with the right planning, reduced government corruption, and a focus on the People-Centered Development Strategy (PCDS), it is entirely possible to improve living standards in the first two years of office.
The PNCR stressed that Guyana’s oil wealth is growing rapidly, and it’s time for that wealth to benefit the people. “We are no longer interested in empty promises with distant deadlines. Guyanese deserve a government that will deliver results now,” the party said. “We believe we can be that government—one that puts the oil wealth in the hands of the people and brings prosperity to all.”
The PNCR’s statement reflects the growing frustration of the Guyanese public, who are tired of waiting for promises to materialize. With the right leadership, the party argues, the country’s resources can be harnessed to improve the quality of life for all citizens, reduce inequality, and foster a thriving middle class.
The PNCR reiterated its commitment to serving the people and ensuring that all Guyanese can enjoy a higher standard of living in the shortest time possible. “Guyanese deserve a government whose sole mission is to serve their interests and improve their welfare,” the statement concluded. “Under our leadership, prosperity for all is not a distant dream—it is an achievable reality.”
