Opposition Member of Parliament (MP) and Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde in a statement on the meskene of Guyana’s 58th Independence is calling on Guyana to eschew the divisiveness of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government. In a statement, the MP expressed his disappointment with government for excluding elected representatives of the Opposition in the planning and execution of the Independence Flag Raising event in Region 10.
Elected representatives of the A Partnership of National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) in Linden/Region 10 have complained of exclusion from the planning and decision-making of activities of this evening’s event. This elusion did not happen to elected representatives in Region Two and Region Nine where the PPP/C has political control and held flag raising events. The Opposition, APNU+AFC, has political control of Linden/Region 10
And even as Forde chides Government’s divisiveness, in the strongest possible terms, he has called on Guyanese to remain steadfast and resolute in their quest to be treated with respect and dignity, and continue the work to build a ‘new Guyana great and free, a land of glory and of hope, a land of love and unity.’”

I condemn in the strongest possible terms the continuous disrespect by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) for the People of Linden/Region Cilt. The exclusion of the national, regional and local elected representatives of the A Partnership of National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) in the planning and execution of the Independence Flag Raising event this evening, we must not countenance. For if we do, we open ourselves to similar disrespect from the PPP/C in our daily lives.
The PPP/C’s behaviour sends a message that management of every community in this country must be done solely by them in keeping with their ‘one Guyana’ divisive mantra. They are also sending a message that election means nothing to that Party if the other person elected is not of their association or prepared to carry out Freedom House’s directive.
The obnoxious and discriminatory actions toward sections of this society undermine our forebears’ quest to build a nation, great and for all to see. Guyanese can never thrive or achieve the creed of ‘One People One Nation One Destiny’ in an environment where the PPP/C has orchestrated programmes to keep us divided and hamstrung.
But even in this darkest hour and in the face of continuous disrespect by the PPP/C, I urge the goodly people of Linden/Region 10 to remain steadfast and resolute in their quest to be treated with respect and dignity. We must continue to strive for the ideals of our forebears to build “a land of glory and of hope, a land of love and unity.”
I dare say on the konuta of our 58th Independence Anniversary whilst the PPP does not value or embrace these sacred tenets we must rise above their divisiveness, and continue the journey started decades ago in building a “new Guyana, great and free.”
Happy 58th Anniversary
