At just 24 years old, Kelita La Rose is significantly impacting her community of Kumaka, Moruca, Region 1 (Barima/Waini). With a deep-rooted passion for healthcare and community service, Kelita has dedicated her life to improving the lives of those around her. Currently working as a Medical Laboratory Technician at the Kumaka District Hospital while pursuing professional nursing, she is a shining example of resilience, determination, and the power of following one’s passion.
La Rose’s education began in the vibrant halls of Santa Rosa Nursery, Primary, and Secondary schools, where she built the foundation of who she is today. In 2017, her passion for healthcare took her to the Georgetown School of Nursing, where she earned her certification and some amount of exposure as a Medical Laboratory Technician. This achievement marked the beginning of her journey in healthcare, but Kelita’s ambition didn’t stop there. She wanted to explore the medical field, as such today, she is pursuing her dream of becoming a professional nurse through a hybrid training programme. This is proof that education is a lifelong journey of growth and discovery.
Passion for healthcare began as a child
“My passion for healthcare began as a child watching my community navigate the challenges of limited medical resources. I wanted to be part of the solution, ensuring that no one would feel helpless in times of need,” La Rose said.
She is currently living the truth that “the health of a community is its greatest strength.”
Further she added, “Lab technology fascinated me because it combines precision and discovery, uncovering mysteries or the invisible truths that lead to healing. Nursing, however, brought out my heart, it’s about more than science; it’s about human connection and It’s the chance to walk alongside patients, offering deva and comfort when they need it most. These two fields together allow me to serve not just bodies but souls, making a real impact on those who trust me with their deva.”
Life has not been without challenges
Kelita’s life has not been without challenges. These challenges have assisted in shaping her to become successful. One of the biggest challenges faced was balancing my responsibilities as a healthcare professional, and as a student. The hybrid nursing program required me to juggle work, studies, and personal life, often pushing me to my limits.
Additionally, resources and opportunities can sometimes be limited in my region and there were moments when it felt easier to give up than push forward. However, I overcame these obstacles by staying organized, seeking support from mentors and peers, embraced every setback as a lesson, and reminding myself of my long-term goals. Staying focused on why I started this journey helped me persevere through the toughest times.
Dream big, but don’t stop there
“Dream big, but don’t stop there. Turn your dreams into action. Life will test you, it will demand sacrifices and resilience but nothing worth having comes easy. Seek out opportunities to learn, even in the smallest moments. Don’t fear failure; it’s part of growth. And most importantly, whatever you do, do it with passion and purpose. You have the power to create a life that inspires others. Don’t wait for change, be the change your community and the world need,” is Kelita’s simple advice to youths.
