Is there a conflict of interest with Commissioner Vincent Alexander?

Dear Editor,

Is there a conflict of interest with GECOM Commissioner Vincent Alexander who has earned among many accolades, national respect for his exemplary work fighting for the holding of credible elections in Guyana?

Some are wondering whether the report that Vincent Alexander is appointed economic team member of the incumbent PNCR party leader with David Hale, Elson Lowe, and Rawle Lucas is true. And if this is true doesn’t it raise serious questions about conflict of interests? Especially, because Alexander is reportedly a member of the unilaterally appointed incumbent PNCR party leader Biennial Congress team.

He may also be selected to serve at the Biennial Congress Election as returning officer. Questions now remain pursuant to the party leader informing the party and public that an independent audit will be performed on the membership CPU, after it was removed without authorisation from the office, would Alexander be participating in a process that values electoral integrity?

What, if any, is Commissioner Alexander’s real role in the carefully choreographed or managed PNCR party election? GECOM Commissioner Vincent Alexander has a stellar reputation for being a fighter of integrity and credible elections. Can there be a credible PNCR Biennial Congress election without the independent audit and report of the Party’s membership CPU? Especially since it was allegedly removed from the office by a paid staffer of the Leader who is the self-appointed Director of the Biennial Congress committee?

How can the Biennial Congress team reconcile that the monthly operating cost for Congress Place is approximately $3 million and the cash inflow is approximately $800,000.00? The math doesn’t add up when there has been no financial accountability under the incumbent Party leader. shouldn’t this be of concern to party supporters and members?

If these stories are indeed true, GECOM Commissioner Vincent Alexander is being urged to preserve his legacy as a champion for free, fair and credible elections in Guyana. It may be best for him to recuse himself from the economic team and the unilaterally appointed Biennial Congress team to protect his integrity now.

Yours truly,

Egland Gomes
