The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD), through its Vice Chairman and Communication Officer Pt. Ubraj Narine, dispatched a letter to acting Commissioner of Police Clifton Hicken requesting a thorough investigation into allegations of corruption raised against Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo and Chinese businessman Su Zhirong.
Two years ago the United States-based Vice News’ in an expose shed light on disturbing information of alleged corrupt practices involving high-ranking government officials for contracts. Jagdeo was directly name by Zhirong, who was his friend and tenant, as the principal. The VP has since denied the allegation and filed a defamation case against the businessman. The state has taken no action to pursue an investigation.
Questioned by the United Nations Human Rights Committee last week, about investigating corruption associated with the VP, Minister Gail Teixiera said no one made a police report. With report submitted by IFAAD it is left to be seen what the Police will do. However, having submitted the report the anti-discrimination institute wants the Commissioner of Police act by initiating a prompt and unbiased investigation, ensuring that all necessary resources and expertise are allocated to the task.
The body has expressed commitment to supporting the Police during this process. “We believe that by working together, we can foster a society free of discrimination and corruption, thus ensuring a brighter future for all.” IFAAD is demanding a transparent and impartial investigation into the allegations, as they signify grave violation of public trust and the principles of good governance. “As an organisation committed to upholding justice and combating discrimination, it is our duty to address instances of potential corruption that undermine the progress and stability of our society,” said Narine. “We believe that all individuals, regardless of their status or position, should be held accountable for any alleged misconduct.”
The organisation is also urging the Police to treat the matter with utmost urgency and transparency to maintain public confidence in the fairness and efficiency of the investigation process. According to Narine, Guyanese are putting their faith in the nation’s democratic system, and it is essential the Police do not disappoint and thoroughly investigate the allegations. To this end IFAAD said it trusts the Commissioner of Police will take decisive action, demonstrating commitment befitting law enforcement agencies to uphold the principles of justice and accountability.
