In the face of formidable challenges, the International Decade for the People of African Descent Assembly – Guyana (IDPADA-G) is forging ahead with inspiring resilience and determination. Despite attempts by the Guyanese government to shut down this vital initiative, IDPADA-G is not only surviving but thriving, fueled by new funding and a steadfast commitment to community development.
IDPADA-G recently secured a generous grant of $110,000 from a US-based organization. These funds are earmarked for the ‘Enhanced Economic Participation and Development Project,’ which aims to empower agriculture-based member organizations and small-scale farmers. The project offers small grants to budding entrepreneurs and established businesses, providing a substantial boost to their economic activities.
Under this project, new and prospective entrepreneurs have the opportunity to receive GUY$400,000 each to jumpstart their ventures. Seasoned organizations can benefit from a more substantial grant of GUY$2 million, aiding in their growth and sustainability. According to Project Coordinator Roxanne Myers, 30 organizations have applied, with 25 set to be shortlisted based on their concept notes.
IDPADA-G’s commitment to capacity building was evident in the series of technical workshops held earlier this year. These workshops, which covered essential topics such as crop management, agro-processing, animal husbandry, packaging, and marketing, attracted 72 participants, with 50 successfully completing all sessions. This hands-on training has proven invaluable, equipping participants with the skills needed to elevate their agricultural practices and business operations.

One of the shining stars of this initiative is a 22-year-old Guyana School of Agriculture (GSA) graduate, Kevin Somrah who has experienced a significant boost in his agricultural endeavors. Everything I have learned from these training sessions is applicable and has provided lots of hands-on experience,” he remarked, beaming with optimism for the future.
