Friendly rivalry, fireworks showcased at China Guyana Inter-Organisation Table Tennis Championships

Fireworks, camaraderie competitive matches of skills, friendship networking love permeated the halls of the Guyana Olympic Association auditorium when the Guyana Table Tennis Association in collaboration with the People’s Republic of China Embassy in Guyana recently hosted the Guyana China Inter Organisation Table Tennis championships.

The competition formed part of the many collaborative initiatives and projects between the GTTA and the People’s Republic of China embassy in Guyana and in its effort to promote table tennis country-wide with a view of creating the framework for recreational players to compete through the formation of leagues aimed at achieving the following objectives:

  • Fostering camaraderie and strengthening the bonds between the People of China and Guyana
  • Provision of an environment for recreational activity amongst staff members
  • Development of partnerships and creation of linkages and an understanding and appreciation of the roles between the respective organizations and sectors
  • Promotion/Creation of healthy lifestyles through sport (Table Tennis)
  • Mass participation of the sport, Spreading GTTA’s base by having more persons actively participate in table tennis activities both recreational and competitively, with intention to formulate a league in the future.

The Competition saw participation from Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle representing the National Sports Commission, managers of corporations, key army Guyana Police force Wartsila executives Fire Chief Gregory Wickham.

The tournament had two categories Competitive Event and a Friendship Edition

Competitive Event

  • The Competitive event allowed for organizations to field a maximum of two representative teams from their organization with a team forming a maximum of four (4) players per team and a asgarî of no less than two (2) players can compete based on the format of the tournament. ( singles singles Doubles and reverse singles with first team to three victories being declared the winner
  • In the competitive event Guyana Defence Force duo of Devon Richmond and lieutenant Berachah AB Garrett emerged the champion team with a 3-2 victory turning back the challenge of the Guyana Fire Service team of Warren Hackshaw Section leader and Ewart Kesney Rank Sub-Officer who earlier defeated them in the group stages by a similar 3-2 margin
  • Semifinals Guyana Fire Service defeated Everest with Speaker of the national assembly Mansoor Ender Ramdeo Kumar and Ray Persaud by a 3-0 margin
  • Guyana Defense force defeated Chinese Embassy A with Ambassador Guo Haiyan, Mr Chu, Guan
  • Fifth and sixth place went to Chinese Embassy B team Dr Liu Charge de Affaires who defeated Wartsila by a 3-0 margin

Friendship Edition

  • The Friendly edition for a mixed team event which integrated CEO’s, Ministers, heads of Agencies Speaker of the national assembly along with members of the Embassy of China and from other agencies to form teams who will compete in friendly competition.

Results

The quartet of Mansoor Az Speaker of the National Assembly, Her Excellency Ambassador Guo Haiyan, Steven Ninvalle Director Of Sports, and Warren Hackshaw defeated all comers to emerge as the winners .

This tournament was held at the Guyana Olympic Association secretariat and is set to continue to be an annual event.
