Education Ministry, Teachers Union Conciliation Talks End; Teachers accept to negotiate from 2024 not 2019

The Ministry of Education has announced that the conciliation process with Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) regarding the timeline for which a multi-year agreement should be agreed upon has come to an end.

According to the Ministry in a release, the process has ended with the parties agreeing that the multi-year agreement will address a period commencing from 2024 and onwards. Bilateral talks will now begin on the multi-year agreement.

The Teachers Union wanted the multi-year proposal submitted in 2019 to be on the table for negotiation. The Government has insisted it will not.

In March 15, 2024 the GTU applied to the High Court for an order mandating the Ministry of Education engage in collective bargaining from 2019 to 2023.
