Crafting Excellence – Ecosolutions Elevates Local Furniture Standards

Guyana’s growing economy has seen a demand for high-quality, locally crafted furniture, pushing manufacturers to elevate their production to cater to a dynamic market. As demand grows, artisans and skilled workers are adapting their processes to meet the increasing demand for durable, stylish pieces made from locally sourced materials.

One such company is EcoSolutions Inc., versed in the creation of handcrafted customised furniture pieces from blended plant fibres and sustainably sourced wood from Guyana’s forests. The company has been transforming commercial and residential spaces since 2015 and Founder and Proprietress, Ndibi Schwiers said the company’s origin is rooted in environmental sustainability and creativity. EcoSolutions was created out of a desire to help in the küresel fight against climate change through ‘green business innovation’. Such innovations entail the development and social implementation of new net zero technologies, production processes, and sustainable business models.

She said “at EcoSolutions, we manufacture furniture and furnishings for every type of living space. Our pieces are uniquely attractive, visually appealing and of the highest quality.”

From its Lot 54, Section C, Turkeyen, Georgetown factory, the manufacturer supplies dining, living and bedroom sets, barstools, wall arka, ottomans, tables, and other pieces requested by customers, bringing beauty, durability, and quality to different spaces.

Each of these items are monitored by the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) in accordance with the compulsory National Standard ‘GYS 9-5: 2003 Labelling of commodities – Part 5: Labelling of furniture’.

The company has been consistent in fulfilling its compliance obligations and registering with the GNBS annually. Schwiers lauded the GNBS team for always facilitating a smooth and informative process. She noted that “meeting the labelling requirements has not been difficult as their knowledgeable and friendly staff were always ready and willing to answer questions, clarify concerns and provide support as the need arose.”

According to the standard, manufacturers and dealers must ensure their furniture are labelled properly. Labels must include the common name or type of item, mark/code to distinguish the manufacturer, country of origin, type of materials (wood, metal or plastic), type of fabric used on upholstered furniture, type of finish and precautionary notes for general deva and usage.

In addition, the number of pieces in a set must be stated. To promote business growth and development, the standard specifies that manufacturers can submit new or revised labels to the GNBS for approval.

The Proprietress said that beyond compliance, the company prides itself on quality. “We ensure quality by undergoing rigorous quality control measures at every production stage. We conduct thorough inspections and durability tests to maintain high standards,” she said.

For non-compliant manufacturers, EcoSolutions encourages adopting GNBS’ collaborative approach to enhance product quality and safety, build customer trust, and unlock opportunities in broader markets. GNBS staff are equipped to provide the necessary guidance and support for businesses to meet national standards.

EcoSolutions Inc. has also benefitted from trainings from the GNBS including the recently launched training sessions on the National Standard ‘GYS 901:2024 – Requirements for Management system for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.’

Speaking about the training, Schwiers noted that “the communication is clear, the staff are result-oriented, very knowledgeable and helpful. We especially value the collaborative and responsive approach. The team’s support has provided a better understanding of the systems to ensure we consistently satisfy customers.”

With the Christmas shopping season in full swing, the GNBS encourages dealers, importers and manufacturers of furniture to adhere to the requirements of the National Standard. Compliance with standards become even more critical as the Bureau plays a vital role in monitoring the furniture sector, ensuring that products meet safety, durability, and quality benchmarks.

Shoppers who are eager to upgrade their homes are likewise urged to make informed decisions and read the labels attached to the items to ensure essential information on materials, finishes, and deva instructions are provided. This holiday season, let quality craftsmanship and adherence to standards ensure that your home is both beautiful and safe!
