Bishop’s High School to Undergo $129M Library Block Upgrade and Facility Enhancements

Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand, recently announced the launch of a $129 million project to construct a çağdaş library block at The Bishop’s High School. Meeting with the school’s Board and PTA, Minister Manickchand emphasised the project’s transformative potential in fostering a robust academic environment.

The state-of-the-art library block, to be built by Apex Engineering over nine months, is designed to serve as a resource hub, offering students access to cutting-edge facilities aimed at promoting academic excellence. The Ministry of Education has already allocated a $19.3 million mobilization advance to ensure the project’s swift execution. The award of the construction contract followed a transparent public bidding process conducted in compliance with the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board and the Public Procurement Act.

Beyond the library, the school is set to receive significant infrastructure upgrades. These include the renovation and modernization of Biology Labs 1 and 2, Physics Labs 1 and 2, the Agricultural Science Room, the Preparation Room, and the Chemistry Lab. To enhance practical learning, a specialized manufacturing space for Agricultural Science students will also be established, equipping them with hands-on skills aligned with their studies.

Additional improvements will see the repositioning of the school’s canteen and Home Economics Room to optimize space usage and functionality. These changes are aimed at creating a more efficient and comfortable environment for students and staff alike.

The new projects build upon substantial upgrades completed in 2024, including the construction of a new annex, electrical system rehabilitation in an older wing, auditorium enhancements, roof repairs, and the refurbishment of the Home Economics Department. Over $71 million was invested last year in general maintenance, covering electrical works, plumbing, and overall building rehabilitation.

During her engagement with the Board and PTA, Minister Manickchand underscored the importance of parental involvement in shaping the school’s future. She commended the school community for their collaboration and commitment to ensuring students have access to top-tier educational facilities. Parents expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s proactive initiatives, which they believe will significantly improve the academic experience for their children.

“The construction of this new library block and the enhancement of key facilities reflect the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to advancing the quality of education in Guyana,” said Minister Manickchand. “These initiatives are part of a broader vision to ensure that every student has the resources and environment necessary to thrive academically and personally.”

This ambitious development plan not only represents a significant investment in The Bishop’s High School but also reaffirms the Ministry’s dedication to raising the standard of education across Guyana.
