The Alliance For Change (AFC) has strongly refuted a fake press release circulating online, which falsely claims that the party has called on the United States to lift sanctions imposed on the Mohamed family and their business interests. The AFC categorically denies the claim, labeling it a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and damage the party’s credibility.
In a statement released yesterday, the AFC emphasised that the fabricated press release does not reflect the party’s views, policies, or actions.
Party Leader Nigel Hughes, who addressed the media at a press conference on January 3, 2024, clarified that the comments he made regarding 2nd Vice-President Bharrat Jagdeo were misrepresented. Hughes was responding to Jagdeo’s remark that anyone running for office in Guyana would be subject to intense scrutiny of their financial affairs and dealings.
Hughes clarified that the AFC believes every citizen has the right to run for office without being threatened or intimidated, either directly or indirectly. He elaborated that, while individuals like businessmen Mr. Azruddin Mohamed and Mr. Terrence Campbell may face scrutiny, it is vital for all political parties and civil society groups to support a political environment where the diversity of candidates enriches the democratic process.
According to Hughes, the broadening of political options is essential to ensure that citizens have a variety of choices at the polls.
“The AFC firmly believes that anyone who wishes to enter the political race should not face intimidation or threats,” Hughes stated. “Political competition should be open to all, and we encourage a broad pool of candidates as it ultimately benefits the electorate. We call on all political parties and civil society groups to take a strong stand on this issue.”
The party expressed deep concern over the circulation of the false release and urged both the public and the media to verify information before spreading or acting upon it.
The AFC stressed the importance of relying on official sources to prevent the dissemination of misleading narratives, particularly when they aim to damage reputations or create confusion among the public.
“We urge everyone to exercise caution and verify information through official channels before making judgments or spreading falsehoods,” the statement continued. “This type of misinformation is a direct attack on the integrity of our democratic processes, and we take it very seriously.”
The AFC has promised to investigate the source of the fake press release and is working to ensure that accurate and truthful information is communicated to the public.
In the meantime, the party has called for greater responsibility from media outlets in reporting news accurately and checking facts before publication.
The Alliance For Change also reassured the public that it remains steadfast in its commitment to transparency, accountability, and upholding the highest standards of communication.
