Pakistan seized control of the first Test against West Indies after a spin-bowling masterclass from Noman Ali and Sajid Khan on day two.
The spin duo shared nine of the Windies’ 10 wickets to fall in less than a session as the tourists were bowled out for just 137 in Multan, a 93-run deficit from Pakistan’s first innings.
Home captain Shan Masood then steered Pakistan further into the ascendancy in the closing session, battling to 52 to help his side close on 109-3 with a 202-run lead.
Noman and Sajid set the tone when bowling all but 14 deliveries in the second innings, the latter finishing with figures of 5-39 to go with 4-65 for his spin partner.
Sajid dismissed Mikyle Louis and Keacy Carty with two successive deliveries in just the third over, and the Pakistan spinner then removed Kraigg Brathwaite and Kavem Hodge in the fifth.
Gudakesh Motie offered some resistance with 19, along with an unbeaten 31 from no.10 Jomel Warrican, though the damage was already done as Noman tore through the middle order with his left-arm spin.
West Indies did manage to add 71 for their last two wickets, battling back from 66-8 at one stage, but Masood and Muhammad Hurraira ensured there would be no visiting revival in Pakistan’s second innings.
Masood played well for his 52 before being run out, while Hurraira added 29 before being dismissed by Warrican, who also removed Babar Azam on just five to give the Windies a slight lifeline.
