North Gaza is in full blown famine says UN official

By Mark DaCosta- The United Nations (UN) has issued a chilling warning, declaring that northern Gaza is in the grip of a full-blown famine amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP), delivered this sobering assessment during a recent interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” shedding light on the dire circumstances facing the territory.

“Famine is an inevitable consequence of conflicts of this nature, where emotions run high and the toll of war exacts its devastating toll,” McCain remarked, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Despite the absence of an official declaration by the UN or any other agency, McCain emphasised the urgent need for swift intervention to avert further catastrophe.

McCain’s remarks, although not constituting an official pronouncement, underscore the severity of the crisis unfolding in Gaza. The WFP is urgently calling for a ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of vital aid, including food, water, sanitation, and medicine, to the beleaguered population, particularly in the north.

Meanwhile, reports from the ground paint a chilling picture of desperation and despair. Humanitarian workers and convoys face relentless obstacles, with incidents of shooting, arrests, and intimidation by Israeli forces hindering their efforts to provide crucial assistance to Palestinians. The situation is compounded by the blockade imposed by Israel at the onset of the conflict, severely limiting the flow of essential supplies into Gaza.

The toll of the protracted conflict is staggering, with thousands dead and injured on both sides. Since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023, more than 34,790 people have perished in Gaza, while over 1,700 have lost their lives in Israel. The relentless violence and devastation have plunged the region into a humanitarian abyss.

The term “famine” evokes images of widespread hunger, deprivation, and suffering on a catastrophic scale. Defined as an extreme scarcity of food leading to widespread starvation and death, famine represents the most severe manifestation of food insecurity. In Gaza, where nearly half the population is projected to face catastrophic hunger by mid-July, the specter of famine is a chilling reality that demands urgent action.

As the international community grapples with the unfolding crisis, accusations of genocide leveled against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have sparked outrage and condemnation. While the World Court refrained from ordering an immediate ceasefire, it ordered Israel to take measures to prevent acts of genocide in its military campaign against Hamas militants in Gaza.

Netanyahu vehemently denied the allegations of genocide, labeling them as “outrageous” and “false.” Despite mounting evidence of widespread destruction and loss of life, Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s commitment to self-defense and vowed to continue its military operations unabated.

The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians is rooted in decades of territorial disputes, historical grievances, and competing claims to land and sovereignty. Since the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, the region has been plagued by cycles of violence and bloodshed, with successive generations bearing the brunt of the conflict’s devastating consequences.

The current war, which erupted on October 7, 2023, following a surprise attack by Hamas militants, represents the most significant escalation in the Gaza-Israel conflict since the Yom Kippur War fifty years ago. With thousands dead and tens of thousands injured, the toll of the conflict continues to mount, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.

In the face of the mounting humanitarian crisis, Guyana has pledged its support for the Palestinian people, committing USD$150,000 towards the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). Expressing solidarity with the victims of the conflict, Guyana reiterated its call for a ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of much-needed humanitarian aid to Gaza.

As the world grapples with the unfolding tragedy in Gaza, the specter of famine looms large over the entire besieged territory. Urgent action is needed to avert further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of the conflict.
