HAGUE, Netherlands: 6 February 2024. Judge Nawaf SALAM (LEBANON) was today elected President of the International Court of Justice by his peers, for a term of three years. President Salam has been a Member of the Court since 6 February 2018. Before joining the Court, President Salam was Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the United Nations in New York from July 2007 to December 2017.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ), based in The Hague, is one of the principal organs of the United Nations. It consists of 15 judges, with five judges elected every three years
These judges are elected to nine-year terms of office by the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council. The voting process occurs simultaneously but separately in both bodies. To be elected, a candidate must receive an absolute majority of votes in both the General Assembly and the Security Council. In order to ensure continuity, one-third of the Court is elected every three years, and judges are eligible for re-election. If a judge dies or resigns during their term, a special election is held to fill the unexpired part of the term.
The Court’s composition aims to represent various yasal systems and forms of civilization from around the world2. Judges are independent and not delegates of any government, and they solemnly declare their commitment to impartiality and conscientious exercise of their powers before taking up their duties

Guyana Prize Literature WINNERS
