A significant number of long-serving employees at the Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) are facing the prospect of retirement without a pension due to their exclusion from the fixed establishment of the M&CC. Many of these employees have dedicated over twenty years of service to the Council.
On Monday, VillageVoice News spoke with several employees at the Council’s stone depot on Princess Street. The employees expressed their dissatisfaction with the Georgetown Labour Union (GLU), led by Carvil Duncan, stating they do not feel effectively represented or that their interests are being adequately addressed.
“For years, we were told by Council decisions that we would be placed on the fixed establishment, but this promise was never fulfilled,” one employee lamented. Furthermore, the workers pointed out that they were never granted leave passage by City Hall.
Many of the employees began working with the Council as teenagers and are now over forty, facing retirement with little to no prospects of receiving a pension. They describe the situation as deeply unfair, given their long years of service.
The workers are now calling for intervention from the Mayor or the Minister to address their plight and ensure they receive the benefits they deserve for their years of dedicated service.
The M&CC and the GLU have yet to respond to these allegations and the calls for intervention.
