First Lady gifts family $15.3M home for Christmas amid call for accountability

First Lady Arya Ali on Thursday gifted 39-year-old Lisa Reddy a $15 Million home at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara. In a statement released by the her office the home fulfills a lifelong dream of the single parent

In a statement the First Lady Office said the home was designed to accommodate Lisa and her four sons – ages 2, 7, 11, and 13 – as well as her 63-year-old mother, Daisy Reddy, who is deaf and mute.

It is furnished with a sofa, television, stove, fridge, dining table and chairs, and beds.

“This home represents so much more than just four walls. It’s the fulfillment of a dream that has been passed down through generations,” the First Lady said shortly after handing over the keys to the house.

The first lady said the project was part of a larger effort by her office and the Government of Guyana to support persons with disabilities (PWDs), and women, particularly those in vulnerable situations.

In addition to the new home, a pledge of $500,000 has been made to the family for a poultry farm, expected to supplement the family’s monthly income and support the children’s education.

There have been numerous calls for the First Lady’s office to make public its spending, given the money is from taxpayers and budgeted. Former government minister and Member of Parliament Annette Ferguson in a recent letter pointed out that $30 million was allocated in the 2024 National Budget. She noted: “It is difficult to follow the monies passing through the Office of the First Lady, since there is lack of transparency and accountability.”
