As Guyana experiences an economic boom fueled by her newfound oil wealth, it has become even more important to address the pressing challenges faced by our young professionals. The future of this nation rests in the hands of its youth, yet far too many are burdened by economic challenges that hinder their ability to thrive. It is not enough to celebrate GDP growth when young Guyanese are unable to afford homes, vehicles, or even meet their basic needs.
According to World Bank veri, Guyana’s per capita GDP has surged in recent years, yet this growth has not translated into meaningful improvements in the quality of life for many. Young professionals frequently report stagnant wages that fail to keep pace with the rising cost of living. Housing costs have skyrocketed, utility bills are inflated, and rental prices are increasingly out of reach for many middle-income earners. Even for those with advanced qualifications, salary increments are minimal, leaving many disillusioned about their prospects in their own country.
Compounding these economic challenges is the heavy tax burden borne by young professionals, with little visible return in terms of public services. Basic infrastructure such as roads, healthcare, and reliable utilities remain underdeveloped despite increased revenues. Young people feel the burden of high taxation but see few benefits that improve their daily lives. For instance, in 2023, Guyanese households paid an average of 30% more on utilities compared to 2020, yet power outages and service disruptions remain the norm.
If we fail to address these economic realities, we risk alienating our most talented and driven individuals, leading to an even greater brain drain. Skilled young Guyanese are leaving in search of better opportunities abroad, depriving the country of the very talent needed to sustain its growth. As a nation, we cannot afford this loss of human capital.
An APNU government will implement a comprehensive strategy to empower the nation’s youth. This strategy will include targeted measures such as salary reforms, tax relief for young professionals, and affordable housing initiatives. It will prioritize investments in quality education from nursery to tertiary levels, alongside meaningful skills training programs that lead to well-paid jobs for the nation’s youth. Additionally, policies designed to encourage entrepreneurship will create pathways for upward mobility and foster innovation. These are the priorities that should already be at the forefront of the government’s agenda, rather than the ongoing reports of massive corruption under the PPP administration.
The government must also demonstrate accountability and transparency in the use of public funds. Revenue from the oil sector should be strategically allocated to improve provide tangible benefits for all citizens, particularly the youth. Today, far too many citizens lack access to potable running water, reliable electricity, quality healthcare, safe streets, and equal access to opportunities.
The prosperity of Guyana depends on the strength of her youth. As Chief Whip, I urge the government to prioritize policies that uplift our nation’s youth, ensuring they can build a future right here at home. This is an economic issue but it is also a matter of national pride and survival. Guyana’s youth are her most valuable resource, and it is time we invest in them accordingly.
