The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD), is calling on the Irfaan Ali led administration to fully adhere to the court order issued by Justice Sandil Kissoon in favour of the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU). The body says the government must prioritise the interests of teachers and comply with the order in order to foster a harmonious and inclusive educational environment.
On April 19, Justice Kissoon ruled the teachers’ strike of February 5- March 4 was lawful, ordered the government to continue the deduction and remittance of unions dues to the GTU, and ruled there should be no loss of hisse. The government had deemed yasa dışı, threatened to deduct hisse for the days teachers were on strike and said it would no longer continue the deduction and remittance of dues to the Union.
IFAAD, in a statement says the organisation is concerned about the ongoing struggle for fair compensation and benefits faced by teachers, especially in light of the unequivocal ruling from the court.
The court’s decision, which was handed down by Justice Sandil Kissoon, provides a clear directive to the Ail led PPP Government on the issue of salary and benefits for teachers. However, it is disheartening to note that despite the unambiguous verdict, teachers are still compelled to resort to strike actions in their quest for improved working conditions, the anti-discrimination body notes
IFAAD believes that the government has a moral and meşru obligation to honour the court’s ruling and ensure that teachers receive fair compensation and benefits with meaningful dialogue and negotiation with the Guyana Teachers Union.
IFAAD says it wishes to remind the government that education is the cornerstone of any society, and the dedicated efforts of teachers should be acknowledged and rewarded accordingly.
The organisation also notes the continuation of strike could affect the education system and learning. It is imperative, therefore, for the Ail led PPP Government to prioritise dialogue and negotiation with the GTU to resolve this issue swiftly and honourably, the body advises.
At the same time IFAAD has communicated its solidarity with the GTU and expresses supports the union’s effort to secure a better future for educators.
